We did two different projects with Michael and the IKA team. In short, we were extremely pleased with the results of both of these projects. The first was a bathroom renovation and then a few years later we did a kitchen reno that included new hardwood floors and doors on our main floor. We liked the professionalism that Michael and the team brought to the project. Michael was there every step of the way from project conception, design, construction and project conclusion. The quality of the work and materials are second to none. Once the kitchen was completed it became our favourite spot in our home and we now spend most of our time there. Michael and the team are invested in the projects they take on. If I ever had a concern during the renos Michael was quick to respond to my questions no matter the time of day. He is always thinking about the project and how adjustments can be made to make the end result even better than first conceived. Let me tell you about an experienced contractor who plans, communicates what to expect and when, provides excellent customer service and delivers quality workmanship. Even though Michael and his team started my kitchen renovation in June 2019, there were many planning conversations on different products that I should be selecting, budgets and expected time frames for start date and completion. With hundreds of renovations already completed, Michael knows how long it takes for products to be purchased, so that they are installed within the required timeframes. Michael also obtains the required permits, researches manufacturers who will provide durable products and hires a team of professionals that deliver quality workmanship. To help with the selection of products and to make sure that I received great customer service, Michael personally drove me to the various suppliers. Before the renovation had even started, I already felt like I was in great hands. My kitchen renovation included the removal of a wall between the dining room and kitchen, which was replaced with a hidden steel beam to support the second floor. New floors were installed throughout the house and re-supported in areas where the floor joists were weak. The renovation also included new kitchen cabinets and backsplash, a 4 chair island, removing and installing a new window, adding wall insulation and drywall, updating electrical and plumbing, moving and installing new furnace pipes and vents, a broom closet, and adding new baseboards. In the end, because of Michaels' expertise in making sure that cupboard space was well utilized and laid out, I had more cupboard space than I needed! During the 2 month renovation, Michael's seasoned planning experience ensured that someone was always working at my house every day. Michael was also on site every day to see the progress and to address any potential problems. As expected, sometimes when you open up the walls or floors, there are surprises. When that happened, Michael always walked me through how the team was going to resolve the issue, so that the renovation could continue and still meet the expected date for completion. What also impressed me was that at the end of each day, the team swept up the debris to ensure everyone's safety. Like many renovations, you tend to add on additional work and I was no different. I added new bathroom and laundry room cupboards, basement waterproofing, ceiling drywall installation, new vinyl flooring throughout the basement, and the replacement of basement ceiling tiles. Because of the great work that Michael and his team did on my kitchen renovation, I hired Michael to replace my original very worn basement stairs in September 2020. In August 2021, he completed a garage renovation that included replacing the garage walls with better support and new vinyl siding, a new barbecue area, new cement flooring and new doors. In January 2022, Michael completed a bathroom renovation that included re-supporting the floor, installing a new bathtub, sink and vanity, new flooring, tiles, walls, and woodwork. As can be expected, throughout the years sometimes mistakes happen. A bottle of vinegar leaked onto the pantry shelf and created a huge bubble. Or suddenly a drawer is not opening or closing properly. It is comforting to know that, as part of his service to his customers, you can call Michael and someone will come to fix any minor issues that may creep up that need to be repaired. I am very happy with all the work that Michael and his team has done for my family over the years. My husband and I recently completely a large renovation with Michael and his team at InStyle and we are incredibly pleased with both the final result and the process. We live in Bloor West Village and we renovated our kitchen, took the wall down between the kitchen and dining room, got built in cabinets and a banquette installed in the dining room, had new hardwood floor installed throughout main floor, a gas insert for existing fireplace, re-configuration of windows and doors at the back of the house, renovated the upstairs bathroom (including enlarging it and moving the door) and got new flooring/baseboards/interior doors in the basement, plus painting throughout (including painting out old woodwork). The project was completed in 12 weeks and everything occurred exactly on the schedule Michael provided - they showed up the day they planned, something happened at the house every day and they finished when they said they would. Michael provides very helpful guidance throughout the planning process. There are tons of decisions and it was very helpful to see his own home (which he renovated a few years ago) and some other houses he has recently completed in the neighbourhood so you can see some things in full scale (vs the small samples of countertop or backsplash). He also has practical guidance about which finishes are most durable, which handles he has seen people pick recently, etc. On pricing, InStyle is fair but not inexpensive. We met with four other contractors in our selection process and Michael was in the midrange of the group. The quality of his work is excellent so I think overall, it’s good value. Michael and his team are respectful of your house. They laid protective board upstairs and along the stairs (where we weren’t changing the hardwood) and did their best not to damage anything. One item that was damaged (a broken pane in a storm window), Michael took responsibility for getting it fixed. We worked closely with Michael and his team for 4 months in the fall of 2016 to prepare for a huge renovation of our property which began in the first week of January 2017. The reno involved a complete redesign of the main floor of our backsplit, which included the removal of walls, the installation of a hidden beam to support the new, open-concept design and a completely brand new kitchen and living room - floors, walls, doors, windows, ceiling, stairs, fireplace - the works. At the 11th hour in preparation of the remodel, we also asked Michael to add to the project a complete redesign of two bathrooms - the main and ensuite. The project began promptly on the promised start date and our four-person family, which included two boys under four, moved out and prepared for the next 12 weeks. Incredibly, we moved home at the end of week 10. Michael had us sleeping in our own beds, in a completely renovated home, two weeks earlier than projected. Michael is an incredible communicator, which is what made him so enjoyable to work with. Leaving no stone unturned during the planning period, he personally managed the selection of materials, literally driving my wife and I to appointments with suppliers. He also took the time to explain how the project would unfold - what to expect and how to prepare so that when the time came to begin, we knew we had made the right decision. During construction, the communication continued. Michael explained the milestones achieved, how the next stages of the project would unfold and professionally, confidently and easily managed the handful of unexpected minor issues that arose. When we moved home, the few minor details that needed to be fixed were completed in a single day, less than a week after we returned. Most importantly, the project came in exactly on budget. What was promised to us in the preparation process that had begun 7months earlier was precisely what the final price was.
